primadesk2Advance Central Services have selected Harland Simon to upgrade and expand their press in Harrisburg, PA to support continued growing commercial print business.

Harland Simon has been selected to upgrade the Honeywell Press Controls on their Goss Colorliner press. In addition to the planned upgrade, an additional folder, full color tower and reelstand will be added to the press line in Harrisburg, PA. This additional press equipment will be from separate locations, with the folder [Goss original] and Tower [EAE control] being completely upgraded to use off-the-shelf, Allen-Bradley PLC hardware.

Furthermore, Harland Simon will deliver two new 250HP AC PowerFlex drive modules to control the new folder and tower being installed. The project also replaces the obsolete PLC/5 master drive PLCs with ControlLogix PLCs configured to support bi-directional units for maximum flexibility.

On the original press line, the new Harland Simon system replaces obsolete Honeywell folder and on-unit controls and is based on off-the-shelf, Allen-Bradley PLC hardware. All console-to-unit proprietary communications have been replaced with an Ethernet/IP network.

    The approach will be:

  • Honeywell on-unit I/O is retained for a minimum cost solution
  • Process Modules [PM…as well as OM and DM] are replaced by Allen Bradley PLC
  • PRINTA management system is replaced by Prima MS and RIPSet
  • Bitbus interfaces are provided by proven standard Ethernet to Bitbus converters
  • Serial interfaces are provided via standard MVI cards, flexible communications cards

Harland Simon’s Managing Director – Americas commented, “It’s very exciting to have been, once again, selected by Advance Central Services to undertake their drive and control upgrade needs….Especially when it follows so closely from the completion of the drive and controls upgrade project at Ann Arbor, MI”

Harland Simon will provide three new P6000 desks, plus two additional folder control touch screens, alongside its latest RIPSet system for calculation of ink presets and its latest Prima MS for upper-level management, monitoring and register presets.

Harland Simon will use Allen-Bradley CompactLogix PLCs with its RSLogix 5000 diagnostic software and Allen-Bradley PowerFlex drive modules with its Drive tools diagnostic software. All the diagnostic software is available at the Harland Simon-supplied maintenance PC, streamlining fault-finding procedures and allowing remote diagnostics and support via a VPN line.

All of the equipment and technology will be delivered and installed without any disruption to production at the Harrisburg’s facility using a system-replacement approach developed by Harland Simon over the past 20 years with customers including Goss, EAE, Rockwell Automation, manroland and Honeywell.

This will be the fourth controls upgrade project Harland Simon has undertaken in North America for Advance Central Services, these being: Huntsville Times, AL; Birmingham News, AL; Ann Arbor, MI and now Patriot News, PA.
