Harland Simon completes the upgrade of more controls at British Lead

BritishLeadMillsIn July this year Harland Simon completed the replacement of the remaining drive controls on the Davy McKee lead rolling line at British Lead in Welwyn Garden City; the main mill drive, pinch roll and rotary shear controls were replaced last year.

All these modules had been obsolete for some time and British Lead were beginning to experience a high level of downtime and unreliability.

The replacement drive modules provide ‘state of the art’ electronics controlling all the existing motors.

At the same time the main control programmable logic controllers have also been replaced.

The new technology provides a number of benefits; as well as improving system reliability there are better diagnostics, monitoring and calibration facilities.

Jon Lemon, the Operations Manager at British Lead said, “The old drives and controls originally installed in the early 1980s had given us excellent service, but we were beginning to have to deal with too many faults and experiencing production disruption too often. We knew that the time had come to ask Harland Simon to provide new drives and controls to bring the necessary reliability back to this mill. We have always been very satisfied with the work that Harland Simon have completed for us over the last few years and once again we are delighted with this successful upgrade.”
